PINA BAUSCH FELLOWSHIP FOR DANCE AND CHOREOGRAPHY

In 2018, Scott became the first Australian and youngest-ever international recipient of the prestigious Pina Bausch Fellowship for Dance and Choreography.

This annual grant program - funded by the Arts Foundation of North-Rhine Westphalia (Kunststiftung NRW) and the Pina Bausch Foundation - gives artists from the fields of dance and choreography the chance to gain new experiences and to develop their own artistic characteristics in partnership with a renowned choreographer, ensemble or institution of their choosing. It is promoted internationally with no age-restrictions and up to four fellowships are granted each year.

Scott selected Spanish choreographer Marina Mascarell as his cooperating partner.

Scott spent four-months travelling with Marina throughout Europe, giving him an unprecedented insight into the European dance scene and first-hand experience of Marina’s artistic philosophy. He received access to all facets of the creative process, from new company creations, remounts of existing repertoire, independent touring and facilitating workshops.

Scott’s fellowship was completed by a final lecture at the Schauspielhaus Wuppertal, Germany, presenting his experiences to the Board of the Pina Bausch Foundation and general public in January 2019.

JURY STATEMENT

Fellowship recipients are selected by an international jury whose decision is final and incontestable.

The jury - Eun-Me Ahn (Korea), Enrique Rivera (Chile) and Shantala Shivalingappa (India) - commented the following on Scott’s application:

“Coming from an insular geographical location, Elstermann had the ability to develop and maintain himself in an intelligent and ambitious international level. Combining a high technical level with a compelling stage presence and a very sensitive and expressive body language, his skills and talent as a dancer are extremely promising and we feel that an immersion in a stimulating and challenging dance environment is crucial for the next phase of his artistic development. The intense and generous schedule of activities with his mentor, Marina Mascarell and her company, and the high quality and wide range of her work, will offer Scott a fruitful and deep understanding of the current European scene, widening his horizon, as well as the perfect opportunity to discover and develop his potential, refine his skills and expressivity, and a first-hand experience of what the life of a professional dancer entails.”
