RITE & REVOLUTION

"A phenomenal fusion with Elstermann's art."

"Broad, programmatic phrases summoned distance and wonder."

"Blue light and a flurry of graceful bodies down the aisles broke the fourth wall."

"A carpet bag centre-stage acted as a memento mori — a symbol of fate."

"As if to mirror Stravinsky, an outsider was drawn from the corps, buffeted from pillar to post."

"The traveller by turns aided and hindered, walking as if on air over dreamlike tones from the orchestra."

"WAYO recreated the sound most brilliantly: with abundant style and panache."

"What a collaboration!"

THE RITE OF SPRING

"Radical choreography to refresh a classical staple."

"Trampolines. So left of centre, so abstract, so clever, so perfect."

"Elstermann utilised the brutal architecture of the Perth Concert Hall to achieve a very similar result. He took it one step further: he left the audience scared to take another breath."

"Exhilaration and mystery played out in equal parts against a massive orchestral palette."

"A languid opening belied the explosion to follow, channelling the revolutionary impact of the original Paris season in 1913."

"That is what Scott did to validate the intensity of Part 2: The Sacrifice. He let us see, and fear the sight of her very last breath."

"Six trampolines on the apron stage lent energy and elevation to six ballerinas whose gawky, angular movement mirrored the music."

"Melodrama enacted high in the choir stalls drew a huge ovation to close out the night."

RITE & REVOLUTION

Rites, rituals & revolutions. Uniting movement and music in an empowering collaboration, choreographer Scott Elstermann joins forces with the West Australian Youth Orchestra for Rite & Revolution, a symbiotic exploration of movement and sonority.

A choreographed dance ensemble brings to life accomplished Western Australian composer Rebecca Erin Smith’s Foreigner or Foreigner and Igor Stravinsky’s masterwork The Rite of Spring. The concert also featured Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet - Fantasy Overture and Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s Hiawatha Overture, Op.30, placing a contemporary perspective on historically pivotal work.
